Old dead trees, burned by the great fire of '88, stand above the new
generation of trees. Yellowstone used to suppress all fires, which
resulted in excess dead matter and higher fire risks. As a result, the
fires that did occur were hotter and more dangerous, and killed many trees
that would have survived normal fires.
