Special Assignment - Logan
The 'Pool is associated with
several packaging facilities around northern Indiana. One
of these is Logan Industries in South Bend. Logan employs
local people, including a number of handicapped people,
to sort out, label, and ship out parts. A recent
corporate reorganization resulted in a large quantity of
parts being transferred from the Garland, Texas facility.
Logan was completely and utterly overwhelmed, so a crack
team of a half dozen QC receiving specialists
from the West Lafayette plant was sent to help out with
the deliveries. We spent the weekend of March 15 and 16
at Logan trying to sort out parts from one of dozens of
trailers. Parts from different packlists were scattered
throughout the warehouse and the dock. Packlists were
missing, or were so long that it took teams of three
people to sort parts, call out numbers, and look the
parts up on the packlists. We were put up in the posh Marriott Hotel (one of a few bright spots in town), treated to dinner, and paid overtime (doubletime on Sunday). It was an interesting departure from the usual grind at the West Lafayette plant... |
